Degrassi: The Next Generation takes place 14 years after the cult hit show "Degrassi Junior High" as students continue to deal with the obstacles of being a teenager. From issues like relationship problems, homosexuality and bullying to more darker issues like rape, school shooting and death. Degrassi: The Next Generation plunges into the world of what this generation is really going through. The premiere focused on Emma (Miriam McDonald). In it, her ex, Sean (Daniel Clark), came back to Degrassi for senior year. Best friend Manny (Cassie Steele) warned Emma not to get involved with Sean, because Emma had a new boyfriend. Her new boyfriend, Peter (Jamie Johnston), liked Sean, until he suspected that Emma might still like him. Then, being the son of Satan, Peter planted drugs in Sean's locker and landed Sean in jail. Peter ruined Sean's life, but Sean got the girl.
Let's backtrack a bit. A while ago, The-N premiered an episode entitled, "Secret." This episode also focused on Emma. The school shooting had passed and guilty Sean bailed out and moved back to Wasaga. Peter hadn't come on the show yet. Emma was confused and depressed. Jay (Mike Lobel), Sean's supposed best friend, made a move on Emma. The two ended up having oral sex. According to Emma, "It's not real sex," but she ended up getting a disease from him.
So, why am I telling you this? You came to hear about the mid-season finale. Well, some things shadow you for life and never leave your side. Sean's out of jail, has a new job, and a perfect girl. The world crashes when he ends up finding out about Emma's little secret with Jay. I smell some trouble for the perfect couple. Can he get over it or will "Semma" break-up (again)?
When I first saw Degrassi-The next generation, I thought how they all seemed to be really good at acting. The first episode was kind of embarrassing for me, but I fell in love with the show. The rest of the episodes were pretty good comparing to some of the shows out there (O.C, etc...) And this was was real teens
When I first saw on this site (IMDB) that the young actors and actresses didn't really do much and this was something new to them. Well, they did a really good job for their first acting job.
A critical success, Degrassi: The Next Generation has often received favourable reviews from Entertainment Weekly, The New York Times, and AfterElton.com. In its initial years, it was frequently the most watched domestic drama series in Canada, and one of the highest-rated shows on TeenNick in the United States.
In 2004, for example, one episode received just under a million viewers in Canada, and over half a million viewers in the US. In recent seasons, however, viewing figures have begun to drop. The series has won numerous awards, from the Geminis, Writers Guild of Canada and Directors Guild of Canada, and internationally from the Teen Choice Awards, Young Artist Awards, and Prix Jeunesse. Filmmakers/actors Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes are fans of the show, and have guest starred in seven episodes.
The series premiered on CTV on October 14, 2001. In 2010, during the ninth season, the series moved to CTV's youth-oriented sister channel, MuchMusic, and the tenth season marked a change in production style which saw the series become a telenovela, a daily soap opera.
The first half of season 11 aired 29 episodes in its first seven weeks, and ended on May 18, 2012. 277 episodes have aired as of July 13, 2012, and the twelfth season is in production.
The series has been syndicated on cable television, and episodes are available on DVD and in new media download formats from Puretracks, the iTunes Store, and the Xbox Live Marketplace. Internationally, Degrassi: The Next Generation has been highly successful in the US, where it is broadcasted on channels such as TeenNick, MTV, and ABC Family, as well as being broadcasted in 140 countries.
