Monday night's premiere for the extended final season of "The Closer" presents an intriguing range of possibilities about where it could all end.Over its previous six seasons, "The Closer" has become one of the most popular dramas in cable history, thanks largely to Kyra Sedgwick's Steel Magnolia performance as Los Angeles Deputy Police Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson.Brenda works in the Major Crimes Unit, which means she leads her team in solving the nastiest crimes and nailing the most repulsive criminals. She has done so not only with keen insight and inductive reasoning, but occasionally by finding elasticity in departmental rules and guidelines.

Think Andy Sipowicz, only about half the size and much cuter.

Viewers know Brenda has always acted with the purest of motives - that is, putting bad people out of commission. But we also know rules are rules, and one of the challenges for regular viewers will be figuring out which case or cases from Brenda's past will return this season to haunt her and perhaps point the way to the end of the series.

Then again, it's also possible Brenda will shrug off the slings and arrows, since they've always been part of the cost of doing business her way. "The Closer" has employed misdirection before, and Monday's episode makes it clear no one is coasting to the finish line here.

The last season will be extended into two halves, with 10 episodes starting Monday and then another run of episodes this winter that build to a 2012 finale.

Sure, this could fall into the category with the other Law and Orders and CSI's but something about this show really stands out probably because its aired on TNT and you'd expect there to be some cheesy movie of the week quality about it. Like Law and Order the show puts more focus on the cases themselves rather than the personal lives of the characters, but The Closer opens the door a little more.

Kyra is really what draws in people to this show, it's something about her character's charm despite the fact the character is from the often ridiculed south. The writers were also keen to make Brenda Johnson a real person, not some super-hero who always wins and always knows the every move of the bad guy; sometimes Brenda makes mistakes and pays for them and sometimes she is insecure about her looks or being freshly relocated to the big city of Los Angelos.

The show just started this summer and I wish it the best of luck, I hope it can become as acclaimed as all the other crime dramas we've got on the airwaves today.

I am new to The Closer, but I've watched every episode this season, and am in the process of catching up with the whole series now because I find it so great. It's good police drama and it's quite funny. It's too bad this is the last season.
