The Saints won the only previous game contested between the two.The only previous meeting between Southampton and Wigan Athletic at St. Mary's was amazingly over twenty years ago, in January 1986, with Southampton running out comfortable 3-0 winners in a F.A. Cup match. But the Latics are aiming to be party-poopers on Saturday by claiming victory in the first league meeting between the two clubs. The Saints enter their first home game of the new campaign on the back of an encouraging opening-weekend display in the 3-2 defeat at champions Manchester City.Nigel Adkins's men, who returned to the top-flight in May after clinching a second successive promotion, led 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium through Rickie Lambert and Steven Davis before a late City fightback.

Nevertheless, the South Coast club will be boosted by their gallant performance as they look to carry an impressive recent home record into the Premier League.

Southampton have won 27 of their last 35 home league matches, all of which were played in the Championship or League One, and keeping St Mary's as a formidable venue for visiting teams will be key to their survival.

Wigan were beaten by their hosts in the only previous encounter between the clubs, which came in a FA Cup third-round tie in 1986, so Roberto Martinez's men could make a little piece of history with a win.

But Martinez looks likely to be without Victor Moses after the Latics accepted a transfer bid from Chelsea for the 21-year-old forward.

Wigan are also looking for their opening win of the new season after losing 2-0 to Champions League winners Chelsea on Sunday.

Martinez admitted his team lacked "intensity" in the opening stages as they slipped to an early two-goal deficit, but was pleased by their reaction as they matched the Blues without forcing a way back into the game.

Japanese striker Tadanari Lee played 70 minutes for the development team this week after a foot injury and could be involved.

Head-to-head

The two clubs have only met once before - an FA Cup fourth round tie in January 1986, which Southampton won 3-0.

Southampton

Southampton won 16 home league games last season - more than any other side in the Championship.

Only three of Southampton's starting XI at Manchester City on Sunday had previously appeared in the Premier League - Kelvin Davis, Daniel Fox and Jason Puncheon.

Substitute Steven Davis scored Saints' 600th Premier League goal in that game.

Billy Sharp is standing by to make his 250th career league appearance.

Wigan

Wigan failed to win any of their first six away league games last season - but lost just two of their final seven.

Roberto Martinez's side kept just two clean sheets away from home last season - in their first and last away matches.

The Latics have scored in each of their previous 10 Premier League away games, netting a total of 14 goals.

Wigan failed to win either of their opening league games in the previous two seasons.
