Seeing the highs and lows surrounding competition season delivers an intriguing and dramatic look at the cast's frantic pursuit of the ultimate National Dance title.Look at how sunny Pittsburg is! The last time we saw our P-burg Dance Moms, they were livid. After star pupil Maddy forgot her solo and ran off the competition stage in tears, Abby Lee Miller was all out of screams. She ran out of screams to give.
Her best tiny dancer had disappointed her, and frankly, she admitted, she didn’t care about the rest of them. She lied to BFF (and Maddy’s mom) Melissa, saying her mother was ill, and then ditched the moms altogether.
So obviously everyone was super excited to see her and give her hugs and kisses back in the Abby Lee Dance Company studio, right? Wrong! The moms are pissed, and they’ve made sure to instruct their daughters on how to look pissed, too. As Abby begins her version of an apology, itty bitty Mackenzie plugged her ears, and Brooke looked too cool for dance school.
“Dance Moms” enters its third season tonight as we join Miller and her star pupils, whom she screams at in what has come to be seen as the TV norm for dance schools.
As the mother of a girl who went to an NYC ballet school where the instructors were very mean — but very lean — and taught the kids actual classical dance as opposed to whatever the heck Miller is serving up, I can only say hapless fury is not normal. These kids are learning more about rage than the stage.
First off, the choreography, for the most part, isn’t even as good as so many dance troops that routinely show up on “America’s Got Talent.”
Miller’s looks old-fashioned and clumsy, and the costumes, for the most part, are a tacky mess. Last season, Miller even had these little girls in nude leotards doing burlesque fan dances. Yuck.
This is not to say that the show isn’t a huge guilty pleasure. It is because she’s so crazy and the actual mothers of the girls get so angry that they lash back at her or are so intimidated that they let her berate their kids as though she’s preparing them for the Bolshoi. It’s TV at its best/worst.
For a guilty pleasure, this show is a full package. It is like toddlers and tiaras--but don't let that stop you. Unlike that show, Abby Lee's show features charming dancers, a no-nonsense and dogmatic yet completely respectable and talented instructor, moms who vary in sanity and charm, and downright real entertainment in dance.
Let me take that back. It's not much like toddlers and tiaras, as these people are real. Despite their abnormal devotion to dance life, each mom and daughter is authentic. Like them or not, each person makes a good point and has a different perspective.
The fun is in watching these perspectives collide while being wowed by the behind the scenes and performances of talented and beautiful dancers.
In the middle, unfathomably, are Maddy and Mackenzie (both Melissa’s kids). Um, did we mention that Maddy ran off the stage crying in the middle of her solo? Mackenzie gets the spot because Abby loves her adorable little charismatic face (and we do too!) Chloe is at the top because she won first place in the junior soloist division, and because she was offered a ritzy scholarship to the Joffrey Ballet.
