Meanwhile, Lemon and Lavon both find themselves in competition with their nemesis Ruby (guest star Golden Brooks).Fast-talking New Yorker and brand new doctor Zoe Hart (Rachel Bilson) has it all figured out - after graduating top of her class from medical school, she'll follow in her father's footsteps and become a cardio-thoracic surgeon. But when her dreams fall apart, Zoe decides to accept an offer from a stranger, Dr. Harley Wilkes, to work with him at his small practice in Bluebell, Alabama.
Zoe arrives in this small Gulf Coast town only to find that Harley has passed away and left his half of the medical practice to her in his will. She quickly finds that Southern hospitality isn't always so hospitable - the other doctor in town, Brick Breeland, is less than pleased to be sharing the practice with this young outsider, and his daughter, Lemon, is a Southern belle whose sweet disposition turns sour when she meets Zoe.
Zoe's only allies are the mayor, former football star Lavon Hayes, her bad-boy neighbor Wade Kinsella, and handsome lawyer George Tucker - who just happens to be Lemon's fiance.
Zoe is out of her element and ready to pack her bags, but a surprise visit by her snobby New York mother leads to Zoe's decision to stay in Bluebell for a while, discovering small-town life and a side of herself she hadn't known was there.
Welcome back to Bluebell, y’all! I’m Kristen; I’ll be takin’ over reviewin’ Hart of Dixie this year, startin’ with the first episode of the season, “I Fall to Pieces.” All right, I promise I won’t do the accent all the time, but I am from the South, so it does slip out occasionally. This show was one of my favorites last year, so I’m real excited to get to talk about it every week.
Picking up the morning after George and Lemon’s aborted wedding, Zoe woke up in bed with Wade after a night of mind-blowing sex that was only slightly interrupted by George showing up and telling her he wanted to be with her. It was quite a choice Zoe found herself having to make.
She’s liked George since day one…but she’s been attracted to Wade for just as long. Who was she going to choose? (By the way, I don’t usually like when guys fight over a girl, but Wade and George’s fight was great…like two old friends who didn’t really want to fight, but felt they had to. Well done.)
It seemed for a brief, flickering moment like she might choose neither of them. George just got out of a fifteen-year relationship, but Wade was acting like a jack-ass (as usual). Still…it’s a lot easier to have sex with a jerk than it is to get involved with a man on the rebound, so although she turned George down, Zoe ended up back in bed with Wade.
I guess that was inevitable. I honestly have no idea who I want her to end up with; I like both Wade and George for different reasons. This is part of what I love about this show. There is no definitive OTP.
Meanwhile, Lemon woke up to the fact that she’s spent her entire life being cared for by men. First her father, then George and even Lavon at one point. She has never been on her own and she’s never worked a day in her life, unless you count all of her charities. After Zoe talks her down from a panic attack (during which the whole town believed Lemon was holding her hostage…I love Bluebell),
Lemon decided to start taking care of herself. She even accepted Wade’s offer of a job at the Rammer Jammer. Another thing I love about this show? I’ve always found something to like about the characters who could have been one-dimensional villains.
Lemon is a bitch and she knows she’s a bitch, but she has a heart and she’s not totally cray-cray. At least not more than any other true Southerner. I think it’s the humidity.
It looks like Lavon might have a new love interest, or rather an old one. Ruby, his high school sweetheart, came back to town on family matters, still holding a bit of a grudge with Lavon for never calling her when he left for college. She immediately made friends with Zoe, something that Zoe desperately needed.
There were also too many men on this show. I mean, they’re nice to look at, but Zoe needed a girlfriend. Ruby seems to fit the bill so far, and I like her dynamic with Lavon, too.
