In an attempt to beautify her town -- and advance her career -- Leslie takes on what should be a fairly simple project: help local nurse Ann Perkins (Rashida Jones) turn an abandoned construction pit into a community park. Opposing them are defensive bureaucrats, selfish neighbors, real estate developers, and single-issue fanatics -- whose weapons are lawsuits, the jumble of city codes, and the very democratic process that Leslie loves so much. Leslie is alternately helped and undermined by her colleague, Tom Haverford (Aziz Ansari), who cheerfully exploits his government position for personal gain. She is also thwarted by her boss Ron Swanson, who is philosophically opposed to government in any form.

Helping Leslie and Ann navigate the Pawnee bureaucracy is charismatic city planner Mark Brendanawicz, whose outlook has been soured by 15 years of public service. If they can pull it off, Leslie hopes that she also will have inspired her uninterested college intern April (Aubrey Plaza) and April's whole generation - all the while moving one step closer to her ultimate goal: becoming the first female president of the United States.

ecreation, we can put last week’s slightly underwhelming one down to the show finding its feet after the summer break. Episode three is back on form and proves that its strongest moments come from its supporting cast.

This week’s episode is all about Leslie passing a bill that will enable the swimming pools of Pawnee to stay open later, enabling the Pawnee Porpoises (a kid’s swim team) to practice. Her vote relies on one man though, and his jealousy of Leslie’s new office and private bathroom will stand in the way of it going through.

Elsewhere, we see Chris introduce a new project whereby members of the public will call the Parks Department with any problems they have, and their calls will be redirected to the relevant department. When, of course, no department pick up on these calls, Ron takes a problem into his own hands and decides to fill in a pothole that’s been causing distress to a single mother.

In Washington, April talks Ben into making a spontaneous road trip to Pawnee to surprise their other halves, except they don’t actually make it out of the parking lot.

There were plenty of funny moments in this episode and if you don’t snort, guffaw or snigger (yes, I am avoiding the term “laugh out loud”) at Leslie’s half-permed head, then there’s just no hope for you. Along with the laughs, there were some great plot developments, mainly Ron and a new love interest.

Ron establishes a connection with Diane, the woman who had the pothole problem, and after a mutual affection for the local store, Food ‘n Stuff, is established, the two seem to get on rather well. Ron however takes a beating in the manliness department after her daughters turn him into a princess and he pretty much just runs away.

In only the few minutes Diane is on screen, it’s clear she is a good match for him and is possibly the female Swanson. She goes on to prove this by tracking him down at the Parks Department (after a helpful hint by Andy) and asking him out. It’s great to see Ron get some flirtation action like this; never let it be forgotten that Ron Swanson is a ladies man.

Joan Callamezzo makes her first appearance this season and is full of snarky quips and irksome smiles; we’ll probably see more of her as Leslie continues to do good in her town. With reappearances like Joan, I can’t be the only one crying out for Jean Ralphio? Maybe Crazy Ira and The Douche? Having some classic season one and two characters back would be an excellent move.

Is anything missing from this episode? Oh yeah, Ann…where were you Ann Perkins? I think we may have missed you but I’m not sure. Nah, we did okay. Come back when you can though.

This was a fine episode with some great developments, dry wit and some pure hilarious slapstick; a great combination that this show handles so well.

I've been a big fan of Amy Poehler ever since she played Andy Richter's pigtailed, dental-retainered little sister (with the huge crush on Conan!) on Conan O'Brien's late night show. That first appearance is still the most amazing performance I've ever seen on TV.

The addled but adorable Leslie Knope is the absolutely IDEAL character for Amy to play! I'm also thrilled to see Rashida Jones, another of my favorite super-talents, doing a thoroughly delicious characterization as Ann Perkins. Word was that the network was worried about the similarity to The Office.

What's to worry? Two genius shows just might be better than one!!! The writing on this show is breathtakingly original and deeply enjoyable. You won't find a better cast anywhere on Earth. This is just another case of "a perfect storm" of comedy excellence on NBC -- along with The Office and 30 Rock. It's well known that the best TV comedy derives from complex, fascinating characters.

Along with the creators and scribes of those other two shows, these writers are the absolute best at devising characters that are equally lovable and horrifying -- you can totally revel in their triumphs AND their tragedies!
