Villa are still only two points above the drop zone, but they are moving in the right direction again and will be aware of the need to pick up points quickly ahead of a testing Christmas schedule.

Stoke will be no pushovers at Villa Park, though, with Tony Pulis' side having taken maximum points from their last three fixtures and four of their last five.

The Potters are now perched inside the top half of the Premier League table and are looking to push on towards possible European qualification.

Maintaining a fine defensive record will be crucial if they are to challenge for a lofty finish, with only reigning champions Manchester City having been breached on fewer occasions than Stoke so far this season.

Stoke boss Pulis is hopeful striker Peter Crouch will be able to return to action against one of his former employers.

Crouch, who missed last weekend's 1-0 victory at West Brom having lost some teeth in a collision with Newcastle's Fabricio Coloccini in the previous match, has had a mouth guard fitted and is being monitored in training, while Pulis is also optimistic forward Cameron Jerome will be fit for selection after an ankle injury kept him out of the Baggies contest.

It remains to be seen whether fellow frontman Michael Owen, sidelined for the last few weeks by a hamstring problem, is ready to feature again, and the Potters will definitely be without midfielders Charlie Adam, who serves a one-match suspension, and Rory Delap (hernia), along with defender Marc Wilson (broken leg).

Stoke City face a trip to Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday afternoon, and have come away with little in previous meetings, having been beaten a depressing 35 out of 53 times.

The most recent encounter between these two sides at Villa Park was less than a year ago, in April 2012, where the two sides shared the spoils courtesy of a 1 - 1 final scoreline in a Premier League match.

Aston Villa

Villa are vying to win consecutive home matches within the same season for the first time in 28 months. They last achieved back-to-back league wins at Villa Park in August 2010, against West Ham and Everton respectively.

They have only won two of their last 12 home games in the Premier League, averaging a point per game in that sequence (W2, D6, L4).

Their tally of 14 points from 15 games is the club's joint-lowest at this stage of a season since the 1994-95 campaign.
Only winless QPR have scored fewer than the 12 goals mustered by Villa so far.

Paul Lambert's side have gained only one point from losing positions this season - the joint-worst record in the division.

They visit Liverpool and Chelsea in their next two league fixtures and then host Tottenham.

Stoke City

Stoke are on a five-match unbeaten run in the league, winning the last three. The only time they have won four consecutive Premier League matches was a year ago.

Tony Pulis's side have accrued their highest points total after 15 games of a top-flight season since also having the equivalent off 22 points in 1976-77.

They have kept an unrivalled seven clean sheets this season. Their defensive record of 12 goals conceded is bettered only by Manchester City.

The Potters are seeking consecutive away wins for the first time in a year - and only the second time in their Premier League history.

Peter Crouch made 37 league appearances for Aston Villa between 2002 and 2004, scoring six goals.
