Based on novels by author Jeff Lindsay, Dexter follows the life of Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), a charismatic blood spatter analyst who works in the forensics at the Miami Metro Police Department. On the outside, Dexter seems like the perfect guy -- he has a sister, Debra (Jennifer Carpenter), that adores him and a steady girlfriend, Rita (Julie Benz), with two kids that look up to him. However, what they don't know is that Dexter moonlights as a serial killer, only he isn't your typical killer. Basing his life on the teachings of his foster father, Dexter only kills people who truly deserve it: he ensures that those who got away with horrible crimes will never kill again. After a few weeks of so-called happiness, the unhealthy relationships Dexter has created are beginning to turn on themselves, forcing Dexter to make dangerous decisions about who to trust and who to give up, all the while attempting to prevent his own capture – by any means necessary. Although Isaac Sirko once told Dexter that happiness, though difficult, is achievable for their “type” of being (killers), he was never able to explain the challenges that one must face in order to become completely happy, or the challenges it puts on the relationships you hold dear. And that is, essentially, what Dexter is facing right now.

After letting go of his need to hide, largely revealing his secret to anyone who will listen, Dexter received his first real taste of human acceptance. Instead of secretly hunting on his own terms, Dexter was finally able to move freely within his life, relying on “those who know” to help maintain some sense of normality in his world of chaos and murder. And even though it has, up until this point, been a relief to him, the difficulty of maintaining those relationships could, if Dexter isn’t careful, lead to his capture and arrest – or worse, the death of someone he loves.

Ever since Debra stumbled upon Dexter’s secret in the season 7 premiere, Dexter has been experiencing a type of complete acceptance he never thought could exist for him and his sister. In an attempt to explore (and expand) that experience further, he attempts to wholeheartedly take on a romantic relations with Hannah as well as a so-called “friendship” with Isaac. As this past season has shown, not all relationships – or those within them – can handle the weight of a murderous revelation.Additionally, now that Dexter has been looking to establish more honest relationships with those who know his secret, the repercussions of his dark dealings are proving too difficult to control. What initially started out as a sisterly reveal of Dexter’s true side has now become, if anything, a time-bomb waiting to explode or implode – either way, they’re equally as dangerous for everyone involved, including Dexter. Now that Isaac has already been killed off, the only two people left with knowledge of Dexter’s true life are Debra, his police officer sister, and Hannah, his murderous girlfriend.

While disagreements between family and significant others is likely to occur, Dexter is experiencing it to a greater, more dangerous, degree. As Debra continues to keep her brother out of jail, Dexter’s want of having a “real” relationship with Hannah has created enemies between her and Debra, with only Dexter standing between the two, having to decide who to trust. Although Dexter knows the type of person he truly his, having to equate that to someone else’s need to kill is impossible, thus making it difficult for Dexter to trust Hannah, even if she is telling the truth.Christmas is in the air, and Dexter is contemplating the future. He’s not one that’s ever thought about it much, but now he sees the possibilities with Hannah. But first, there’s one more thing from his past that he’s got to square away. Hector Estrada, the man who orchestrated his mother’s murder, is being released from prison. He’s already taken care of the thugs that did it, now he can finish off this last piece of the puzzle. After Estrada’s release, Dexter tracks him down and pretends he has some drugs to move, setting up a meeting with him for Christmas Eve.

Deb continues her relentless pursuit of Hannah, going to visit Arlene, who, according to Hannah’s father, saw Hannah poison an old counselor of theirs. She tells Arlene that she will give her immunity if she gives Hannah up; if she doesn’t, she’ll be going to prison as an accessory. Arlene immediately runs to Hannah and talks to her about the visit. Hannah shows up at Deb’s house and asks if they can bury the hatchet, since they both love Dexter. Deb tells her she’ll never give up her pursuit, because she loves Dexter and will do anything to protect him.

Dexter shows up at the Captain Matthews’s (Geoff Pierson) boat to meet with him. Matthews tells Dexter that LaGuerta (Lauren Velez) thinks Doakes is innocent and that she thinks Dexter is the real Bay Harbor Butcher. They talk about his brother (The Ice Truck Killer) and how seeing something like Dexter did at a young age could mess someone up for life. Matthews explains that it looks odd that the cabin that Doakes was killed in was rented to one of the guys that killed Dexter’s mom. Dexter tells him Doakes never liked him and that he saw Doakes on a boat that he kept at the same marina as his so he moved his boat to stay away from Doakes. He tells Matthews that he never came forward with this because he was afraid of what Doakes might do to him or Debra.

Debra is at Arlene’s (Nicole LaLiberte) place and finds her with two kids. She also learns that this is her first Christmas clean and sober. Debra tells her about the halfway house counselor that Hannah killed. She tells Arlene that she knows she was involved and that if she helps her she will give her immunity, but makes it clear that if she doesn’t help she will be coming after her and not stopping until she is jail.

Dexter tells Debra about his meeting with Matthews. He tells her he has a plan in place to plant some evidence and make it a certainty that they finally leave him alone. Debra tells him that she will do it. She isn’t going to let Harrison grow up without a father.

Tragedy nearly strikes when Deb is involved in a car accident – she blacks out behind the wheel. When Dexter goes to see her in the hospital, she tries to convince him that Hannah poisoned her with her own anti-anxiety meds. Dexter doesn’t want to believe her, but he goes to Deb’s house to look for evidence. He also examines the car, where he finds a bottle of Deb’s water, which he sends to the lab for analysis. He does confront Hannah about it, but she denies it adamantly, telling Dexter he needs to decide what he wants.

Dexter meets up with Estrada, and quickly gets the jump on him. He’s all set to kill him when Estrada accuses Dexter of working with the police to frame him. When Dexter asks for clarification, we learn that LaGuerta pushed for his release in the hopes of catching Dexter in the act. Sure enough, she shows up at the site, but Dexter and Estrada escape. The next morning, Dexter discovers that Deb’s drinking water was laced with her anti-anxiety medication. Unable to deal with Hannah’s betrayal, Dexter turns Sal Price’s poisoned pen over to Deb. The episode ends with Hannah being arrested, and Dexter realizing he was foolish to look forward to the future.
