American Jewelry & Loan is a large, lucrative pawn shop where people bring in everything from alligators to prosthetic limbs. Every pawn ticket has a story and there are over 40,000 stories to tell in this warehouse. The premiere of Hardcore Pawn, which airs on July 10 at 9 p.m. (ET/PT), is packed with excitement, conflict and a few funny moments. And don’t forget all the characters that walk through the doors, looking to sell some odd items. One man wants to sell fortune-dispensing napkin holders. Another man wants to sell his custom truck painted bright green. Of course, some people just want to cause trouble, like the guy who harasses Ashley right in front of her father. In those moments, the Gold family – mainly Les and son, Seth – are quick to regulate, backed up by a handful of beefy security personnel.

Like all reality television, however, it’s hard to imagine why people would behave in this manner, knowing they were being filmed and that their ridiculousness would be broadcast to a national audience. Yet, in some ways, it doesn’t really matter since audiences can probably imagine some people in their own lives that mirror the people shown on the show.

Furthermore, the featured customers who walk into the shop are really just foils for the Gold family, who are very charismatic. It’s fun to watch them shut down a mouthy patron or haggle on pricing. And for all the drama between them – manufactured for entertainment or not – the moments of real familial bond still shine through and are the most effective parts of the show by far.

The show has been largely compared to Pawn Stars on History, but in the vein of other truTV programs (Operation Repo and All Worked Up for example), the focus is mainly on the human aspects of drama, conflicts, humor, and absurdity between the staff members and their customers, rather than the significance of the items being brought into the shop.

Because of the similarities however, Hardcore Pawn has been accused of being simply a knock-off and a capitalization on the breakout success of Pawn Stars.Les has said that Hardcore Pawn is a more-realistic portrayal of a pawn shop than Pawn Stars: "There will be people from all walks of life laughing, crying and experiencing a wide range of emotions.

Every item has a story. And some of these stories are incredible, whether you believe them or not... We're a Detroit-made business that represents what real pawn shops do... [catering to a] wide range of real people who need money.

What you’ve had in the past is this stigma that pawnbrokers only dealt with drug dealers and drug addicts and thieves. Now, what truTV is showing you is the mom that has two kids at home that need food on their table, and she needs to put a roof over their heads."

Some scenes featured in Hardcore Pawn have also been speculated to have been staged;however, Les defends the show, saying that no part of the program was staged.

According to Marc Juris, executive vice president and general manager of truTV, "Quite honestly, we did absolutely nothing different than we would have done whether or not the other show was on the air... We look for shows that really hit our sweet spot and when they're right for our audience is when we put them on the air." He also noted that Hardcore Pawn was in development for more than a year and two test episodes aired in December 2009.

I don't know why Australian TV stations force this crap on us viewers but I can assure anyone reading this that I would rather watch a Peewee Herman movie. Yes totally scripted and totally all actors. no entertainment value whatsoever. The bad acting includes rants from mostly Black Americans usually because they cannot get enough money out of their used old CRT television set.

The daughter is a spoilt brat and I doubt you would find a shop assistant in Australia with an attitude such as that. Typical rude brash Americans. Well I would like to think that Americans aren't typical of these people. If I were an American I would ask the shows producers to decline showing this show in other countries for fear of ruining their reputation as a peace loving nation.
