The show was renewed for a 10-episode second series as part of E4's decision to stop airing Friends and filming began on 29 July 2011.The second series premiered Monday 19 September 2011and was followed by a reunion episode presented by Rick Edwards, and a 90-minute Christmas Special, which aired on 22 December 2011. A 10-episode third series was confirmed on 21 November 2011 and began airing on 2 April 2012.
The fourth series began on 15 October 2012, with five new cast members including Andy Jordan, Sam Cussins, Stevie Johnson and Lucy Watson, famous for people "getting up in her grill".
On September 26, 2012, it was confirmed two other cast members were joining the show for the fourth series—Sophia Sassoon, the ex-girlfriend of current cast member Spencer, and 21-year-old Ianthe Rose Cochrane-Stack, Richard's new girlfriend. This year's Christmas special will air on 24 December, 2012.
Most of the series focuses on the inner-relationships of the group: the 'Will They/Won't They' romance between Caggie and Spencer; the recently ended relationship between Millie and Hugo; as well as the strong friendship between Ollie, Cheska and Binky - which is made complicated by the presence of his ex-girlfriend Gabriella.
The show also looks at their professional lives, most notably through Francis' diamond enterprise and Amber's boutique as well as Caggie's and Gabriella's singing careers. More recently the show has dealt with series 2 cast member Jamie's dream to open a sweet shop in London: Candy Kittens. One of the most famous Candy Kittens is Fiona McLaughlin who is a close family friend of Jamie.
The theme music is different for each series and started with 'Punching In A Dream' by The Naked And Famous for the first series, 'Midnight City' by M83 for the second series, and 'New France' by Orbital featuring Zola Jesus. The theme music returned to 'Midnight City' by M83 for the fourth series.
Since the trend of The Hills began in the USA started a few years ago, we have seen a number of spin offs and then some imitations. There was The City and others that don't deserve memory. The genre of faux reality then made it across the pond to brighten our TV screens with the televisual event of 2010 - The Only way is Essex.
TOWIE (as it has become known in the glossy mags) was cringe worthy, terribly shot, idiotic and mind numbing, yet it won a place in the nations heart because of relatability and the fact that you could sneer at the TV screen on your high horse. Made in Chelsea, however, is everything that TOWIE is apart from the lovability.
The characters (sorry, REAL PEOPLE) are genuine arses who lack any of the wonderful absent mindedness which attracts us to the Essex based variant. A very good example would be on TOWIE, when a group of the subjects go on a poorly planned camping trip and hilarity inevitably ensues. The contrasty on MIC involves some very rich frolicking in Cannes.
Most of us have had bad camping experiences which we can look back on with a smile, but the fact that this supposedly reality based show takes their minions to a place which few of us could afford to buy a beer, alienates the viewer to the point of no return.
