The Sky Blues are clearly on top, having won 31 and lost only 7 of the 50 games.

The most recent encounter between these two sides at Eastlands was just last season, in January 2011, with Manchester City running out comfortable 3-0 winners in a Premier League match.

That success went some way to making up for the defending champions' defeat at Sunderland on Boxing Day, which allowed United to open up their significant lead.

City now head into the second half of the campaign knowing they must build on their win at Norwich if they want to get their title defence back on track.

Roberto Mancini's men also have the added pressure of third-placed Chelsea closing in, with Rafael Benitez's men having recently found form to win their last four on the bounce and cut the gap between them and City to four points.

But City will be feeling confident as they prepare to entertain Stoke, having only lost at the Etihad Stadium once this season.

The Potters have struggled to find away form, winning just once on their travels, but claiming six away draws.

Despite their troubles on the road, Tony Pulis' side sit eighth in the table after going unbeaten in 10 league games and will be keen to build on that run by upsetting their hosts.

Stoke midfielder Steven Nzonzi will be available after appealing against his sending-off on Saturday, when he was shown a red card for an alleged stamp on Southampton's Jack Cork.

Geoff Cameron returns after serving a suspension for accruing five yellow cards and could replace Ryan Shotton at right-back.

Rory Delap (hernia) and Marc Wilson (broken leg) are both unavailable for the Potters.

Manchester City

They have won all four of their previous New Year's Day Premier League fixtures at home.

City have scored 18 goals fewer after 20 games than at the equivalent stage last season. They are also six points worse off in the current campaign.

Roberto Mancini's side have recovered 15 points from losing positions - only Manchester United (24) and Everton (17) have fared better.

The defending league champions are yet to lose a game after opening the scoring (W9, D1).

Stoke City

Stoke are unbeaten in their last 10 league games (W5, D5). The only team to have gone on a longer unbeaten run at any point in the Premier League this season are Manchester City (15).

The Potters have lost just three league matches this season, a record bettered only by Manchester City and Everton (two).

However, they have lost all 10 of their Premier League trips to Manchester since promotion in 2008, scoring just three goals.

Kenwyne Jones has scored in three of his last four appearances, having previously gone 27 league games without a goal.

Jon Walters has started each of Stoke's last 73 league games, the longest current run of any outfield player in the league.
