However Brian McDermott's side will be full of confidence having taken seven points from their last four league outings, including last weekend's 3-2 comeback win against West Brom.

But Newcastle boss Alan Pardew will take heart from the fact Reading are yet to win on their travels in the top-flight this term, while all five of the Magpies' wins in the league have come at St James' Park.

Newcastle manager Pardew could welcome back defender Steven Taylor for the clash.

Taylor has returned to training after recovering from a hamstring injury suffered in November and could feature, while striker Shola Ameobi is available after he missed last weekend's goalless draw with Norwich through suspension.

Fabricio Coloccini looks set to continue in the Newcastle defence despite continuing rumours linking him with a move back to Argentina but Hatem Ben Arfa remains sidelined.

Newcastle United are ready to welcome Reading to St. James Park on Saturday afternoon, aiming to preserve their record of never having lost at home to the visitors. All the previous meetings between the two have been won by the Magpies.

The previous match played between the two at St. James Park was more than three years back, in August 2009, with Newcastle United running out comfortable 3-0 winners in a Championship match.

 Newcastle

Newcastle have lost five of their last seven Premier League matches (W1, D1, L5). They have won just two of their last 13, and only three of their 17 league games (W3, D4, L10) since Pardew signed his long-term contract with the club.

The Magpies' total of 21 points after 22 matches is their lowest-ever tally at this stage of a Premier League season. It's their lowest since they had 17 points in 1988-89, when they were relegated.

After 22 matches last season, Newcastle were sixth with 36 points - this season they are 16th with 21 points.

Newcastle have lost on eight of the 10 occasions that they have conceded the first goal in this season's Premier League, drawing the other two times.

Reading

Reading have won two of their last three league matches.

The Royals have lost their last six away league matches and haven't won away from home in the league all season.

All six of Adam Le Fondre's league goals this season have been scored at the Madejski Stadium.

Pavel Pogrebnyak has scored in three successive Premier League games, the first time that he has done that since his first three appearances (playing for Fulham).
