Californication has always been a show about sex, drugs, and rock and roll, so to speak. It’s been about Hank Moody, the philandering writer californicating all over the place. He has Karen, his baby mama, which created their daughter Becca, and then there is Charlie (Hank’s agent) and Marcy, who are now divorced. This is the core of the show, with guest appearances by notable actors, but more importantly beautiful women who cross paths with Hank in pretty much every episode.
It’s a chaotic half hour of television that was no doubt fun and amusing in its earlier years, but in the past couple or so seasons the show has mostly become something of an analysis on how absurd a television show can get the longer it continues.
I love the absurdity at times, mostly because I enjoy watching these characters make ridiculous decisions, and other times I realize that what I’m watching isn’t “prestige” television or “highbrow” television, and that’s fine. Not every half hour of television needs to be Louie or Girls – television is entertainment after all. Whatever Californication is, and has become, is fine by me because I can enjoy hanging out with this crew once a week for roughly 30 minutes.
I don’t expect this show to make me think about the struggles of being a writer in California — although when it does it can be very good — but about the struggles of being Hank Moody being a writer in California. There is a big difference.
When we last left Hank Moody, Carrie (Natalie Zea) drugged him and they both passed out as Season 5 faded to black. Not for a second did I think Hank would be dead, but I did think that could be a possibility for Carrie. I thought that no matter the outcome for Carrie, it would play into Hank’s continued spiral downward into the abyss of his philandering ways, and how that would affect his relationship with Karen.
I can't talk about this show enough. It's just genius. I mean, it's so good it survived 75% of the advertisers pulling off after the pilot because of all the boycotts these sad little organizations were doing. It also survived a lawsuit by Red Hot Chilli Peppers on some crap about the name of their song and the name of the series.
Well, Californication got nominated to 2 golden globes and won one even though it's a series that doesn't cover a big age range. I'm just afraid Hollywood will screw up as it always does and pull the show off the air.
So, I'm telling you people, watch the the first episode and you'll know what you're missing. This series is a gem.
