Dance Moms is an American dance reality series that debuted on Lifetime on July 13, 2011. Created by Collins Avenue Productions, it is set in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the Abby Lee Dance Company and follows children's early careers in dance show business and their mothers. A spinoff series set in Miami at Victor Smalley and Angel Armas' Stars Dance Studio premiered on April 3, 2012.
On October 10, 2012, Lifetime announced that they picked up Dance Moms for a third season consisting of 26 episodes, which debuted on January 1, 2013.
Dance Mom Kelly and her two daughters Brooke & Paige quit the Abby Lee Dance Company. Kelly pulled her daughters out of the program because Abby mistreated them. They just couldn’t take it anymore. I’m pretty sure that Kelly would’ve pulled her kids out of the program years ago if there wasn’t a camera crew around to film their every move. These moms and daughters love being on camera, so that probably played a part in Kelly allowing her daughters to stay in the program these last two seasons.
Abby didn’t have her usual pyramid up in this episode (because she didn’t have enough people to do a pyramid). She needed at least 6 dancers to complete the pyramid, but she currently only had 5—Maddie, Mackenzie, Chloe, Nia, and Kendall. Abby held an audition to find replacements for Brooke & Paige.
She was originally looking for two dancers to replace them, but she eventually chose just one 13-year-old dancer named Ally. Abby was looking for someone to compete in the 13-15 age category, and Ally fit the bill. Ally’s mother Shelley, on the other hand, did not fit in with the other moms. Shelley & Abby are becoming best buddies though!
The idea about Dance Moms are the mothers of the children at a Pittsburgh dance studio owned and taught by Abby Lee Miller. It's really Abby's show because she dominates it with her size and presence. I remember being in dance school as a child but I doubt that the dance moms were ever that ruthless.
The kids in this dance troupe are competitive which makes it hard to watch at times. Mothers and their children have their egos and they're super sized at times. Abby's teaching techniques aren't favorable. They can be verbally abusive at times towards the children and their mothers.
She has her favorites too and battles them against each other. The mothers on the other hand make it hard to watch their scantily dressed children in the performance room behind the screen and watch them in their own room. I don't enjoy watching the children who only wear minimal costumes at the dance studio and even on stage.
I would have preferred to see a more rigid training and more clothing on the kids. Abby's history is vague and empty. We don't know much about her biography including her own training. She has her hands on the hips in the commercials.
