Along the way they battle their friends, families and each other as they try to do what's best for themselves and their children. It's not easy to maintain the lifestyle they were accustomed to when the family's primary bread winner is in lock up. From The Godfather to The Sopranos to My Cousin Vinny, these women are sick and tired of the lies and stereotypes that exist about their lives.
They're determined to finally set the record straight and show the world once and for all that while their lives may seem crazy at first glance, they love, laugh and get their hearts broken just like everyone else.
The idea for the show came from Jennifer "Jenn" Graziano, sister of cast member Renee Graziano.The second season of the series debuted on January 1, 2012 with two new cast members: Ramona Rizzo and Angela "Big Ang" Raiola.
On May 9, 2012, VH1 announced that the series had been renewed for a third season.On August 12, 2012, Renee Graziano tweeted that filming was underway for Season 3.It was announced on December 11, 2012 that the third season would debut on January 6, 2013 with a new cast member, Love Majewski.
Karen Gravano is the daughter of Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano, a former underboss of the Gambino crime family and federal informant.She was in a seven-year relationship with Drita D'Avanzo's husband, Lee.The single mother has one daughter, Karina, who makes appearances on the show and Karina's father is David Seabrook.
The couple refer to David on Mob Wives as Karen's former fiance and in season three, Gravano finds out that Seabrook is having a relationship with a new woman as told by her daughter Karina. Karen and David's were involved together as part of Sammy's drug ring in Arizona.
One of the main issues I have with the show is the concept..Now, I'm not an expert on mobs but I do know you're not suppose to publicly associated yourself with the mob. Doing so will result you "swimming with the fishes". With that said, I'm very surprised that this show was even picked up.
The show itself, is about four or five women who have family members that are involved with the mob. These women have a very tough and off putting exterior. It can be assumed that these women have some type of mental disorder and that they need to seek professional help.
But instead of that, they go on national television and air their dirty laundry for all to see. The show does not have a plot, it pretty much resolves around when their husbands are being released from prison and the old family drama.
Italians have been targeted as the new money maker in television, from Jersey Shore to Cake Boss. Italians have been exploited and profited in the way of reality shows. So, it isn't surprising that a show chronically the lives of women who are affiliated with the Italian mob was showcased.
