After realizing that her life isn't advancing at Seattle Grace, Addison packs her bags and heads off to Santa Monica to start a new life. She reunites with her newly divorced med school friends, Naomi (Audra McDonald) and Sam (Taye Diggs), and joins them in their chic private practice. The doctors of Oceanside Wellness and Pacific Wellcare work on the most difficult cases, patients whose medical needs often pose moral and ethical dilemmas.
Though they may heatedly disagree at work, and though their personal lives may complicate matters, at the end of the day they are the best of friends, always ready to be there for each other.
Private Practice returns with an odd, but wildly appropriate season premiere that does well to establish multiple storylines for its sixth and possibly last season. And if the title of the premiere, “Aftershock” is not an indicator, there are quite a few shockers that unravel in true Shonda Rhimes-fashion.
Shockers that surely leave Private Practice watchers fangirl-screeching, for both joy and damnation. In this premiere, there are laughs and gasps aplenty which set up a general feel of what we can expect this season.
When I heard Private Practice was returning this Fall with only thirteen episodes, of which might mark the final season of Grey’s Anatomy’s devilishly charming and occasionally controversial sister series, the Examiner had to review it!
The premiere of Private Practice Season 6 give us some answers to some of the questions that last season’s tantalizing finale presented and set up some new storylines for each of our characters. Storylines that make this Examiner wonder how Ms. Rhimes could possibly wrap up the series in thirteen episodes.
And if this isn’t Private Practice’s final season, can it live on even after the star of the show, Kate Walsh departs? We’ll see, but right now we have bigger, more pressing matters to tend to…
That said, Addison has somehow, through all of the strife gotten some semblance of her happy ending. But as everyone knows, happy endings are not as simple as all that in Shondaland. Addison even fumbles on her words making it clear that she loves Jake. And now Jake is moving into Addison’s cozy beach home. It seems baby Henry has a new father. But just because Addison is sitting happy in Jake’s lap now doesn’t mean it’s going to be all rainbows, sunshine and unicorn babies from here on out…
The other guy previously vying for Addison’s attention, Sam, has moved along just fine with a new labor and delivery nurse Charlotte stole from UCLA, Stephanie. It’s too early to tell if Sam and Stephanie are a nice fit per se, but it would be nice to see Sam happy, just as Addison is.
I have been watching since the back door pilot, which should have warned me how the show was going to be. Even so there are such good actors on the cast that I ignored my initial impression of the slow, dragging storyline of Private Practice and watched anyway.
I loved Amy B on Judging Amy and Kate Walsh was enjoyable enough on Grey's. I'm also a fan of Taye Diggs. Still there's something missing from the show. Its most upsetting for me to see Amy playing this sad woman, Violet? I'm not sure I enjoy that very much.
This season's premiere just proves that even the best of actors can't make do with a so-so plot line. I know Shonda Rimes means well but I'm not interested so far. I guess I don't know where she's going with this. I'll still be watching and expecting more but only to see the actors I love suffering in their roles. Hopefully the writers will give them the gift of better storyline soon.
