Of the 29 games played, Saints have recorded 6 wins, and Swansea City have come away with 14 victories.

The last time the two teams met at Swansea City was just over four years ago, in October 2008, with Swansea City running out comfortable 3-0 winners in a Championship match.

Since lifting the first major piece of silverware in the club's history, Swansea's league season has meandered along and it's hard to argue those facts aren't intertwined. Their passing style is still pleasing on the eye but they are conceding too many goals and missing too many chances.

It's hard to be too critical of Swansea after what they've already achieved but having raised the bar so impressively they owe it to themselves to stop the season fizzling out prematurely.

There might be better stories unfolding at other grounds, more drama elsewhere, but in terms of pure football this one could be the best of the day.

Compared to the drama of 'The Survival Scrap' and the excitement of 'The Fight for Euro Millions', I suppose 'The Tussle to Finish in the Top Half of the Table' doesn't have the same ring to it. However, to Swansea and Southampton it certainly matters; a sign of progress as ninth takes on 12th, with just three points between them.

Given Southampton's incredible ascent from League One to the Premier League in two fantastic years, this season was really about staying up. I'm sure there will be some Saints fans who still fear they're not safe yet but as a detached neutral I know that they are.

Like many others I was puzzled, angered even, when the owner Nicola Cortese sacked Nigel Adkins in January but the fact is the team have made giant strides under Mauricio Pochettino.

I saw his third game in charge at Wigan and although they conceded a last-minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw that day, the signs of progress were there. Schneiderlin and Cork ran the midfield, Rodriguez looked like a £6m striker and, of course, Lambert scored.

Swansea

Swansea have picked up only four points from five Premier League games since winning the Capital One Cup.

They have won just four of their last 17 league matches.

Swansea City are yet to win in the Premier League this season when they have fallen behind (D7, L11).

Leon Britton could make his 400th league appearance.

Southampton

The Saints are undefeated in their last five league matches.

They have scored the opening goal 18 times this season - only Manchester United (19), Chelsea (20) and Tottenham Hotspur (20) have done so more often.

Southampton have thrown away more points (29) from winning positions this season than any other team in the top flight.

Rickie Lambert is the top-scoring Englishman in the division this season with 14 goals.
