I've watched every show Melissa has ever been in, and I've enjoyed all of them. However, so far her character on Melissa and Joey is a little over the top. I think the character needs to be toned down a little, in many different areas. First, Melissa is a beautiful girl. Why cover her face in what appears to be clown make up? Second, the outfits she wears are a little bit too "Soap Opera."
I've never seen politicians dressed like that in real life. And third, the character is somewhat annoying. She's way too loud, and her lines seem just a little to "snappy," and unnatural. She sounds like how you would expect someone to sound after drinking 4 pots of coffee. I know that none of this is the fault of the actress, because I've seen her other shows, and her characters have all been played really well.
I think the show has potential, and I like the storyline so far... Melissa's character (and even Joey's to a degree) just need to be toned down.
ABC Family begins their summer television season with the season 2 premiere of Melissa & Joey on Wednesday, May 30th with two brand-new episodes. Melissa & Joey is a throw back family comedy starring Melissa Joan Hart (Mel) and Joey Lawrence (Joe) and is filmed in front of a live studio audience. Season 2 picks up right where season 1 ended, with the bickering main couple not only fighting each other, but also the undeniable chemistry between them.
Mel and Joe pick up in “I Can Manage” dealing with the fallout from last season’s finale, when a leak in the ceiling brought the upstairs’ tub crashing into the family room. At this point, Mel and Joe continue to do what they do best: argue and fight over how to properly run her home, which at this point is in full-blown remodel stage. They fight, they bicker, they make up, and all it does is work for the audience.
One thing I appreciate while watching this first episode is the larger role that both Taylor Spreitler (Lennox) and Nick Robinson (Ryder) look to be given this season. Both actors show great promise in their improved comedic timing, and it’s nice to see the writers giving them the material that acknowledges that they are becoming young adults.
Lennox spends the episode dealing with the roller coaster of emotions following the breakthrough of her one-act play, and the opposite reaction it garnered at the school. So while Lennox is in constant flux, Ryder fills the role of resident parent. Not only was he the voice of reason about the home remodel, but he was also the only family member that read Lennox’s play. This fact led Ryder to have to give an outlined version of the play to Mel throughout her conversations with Lennox.
Melissa & Joey kicks off season 2 with back-to-back new episodes on Wednesday, July 18th at 8:00 & 8:30 PM ET/PT and can be seen every Wednesday at 8:00 PM ET/PT on ABC Family.
