Hosted by Cat Deeley, SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE traveled across the country to Chicago, Dallas, Nashville, New York, Los Angeles and Miami, in search of dancers who represent the best in America. Those who shine during auditions are given a ticket to Las Vegas for callbacks, where they work with top choreographers to learn and then be judged on multiple styles of dance. After weeks of audition rounds, So You Think You Can Dance season 9 jete'd into high gear this week by naming the Top 20 contestants who will compete to win the titles of America's Favorite Male and Female Dancer. Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and guest judge Zooey Deschanel of New Girl presided over the Top 20's first performances. Zooey loved every routine (shock), but crotchety Nigel made the whole group re-perform their final Mia Michaels-choreographed number because four dancers fell.

So now what, considering the changes to the show's format? To weeks from now (July 11), the paired-off dancers compete with no elimination. The following week (July 18) will be the first combined performance/results show.

The series first premiered on July 20, 2005, was created by American Idol producers Simon Fuller and Nigel Lythgoe and is produced by 19 Entertainment and Dick Clark Productions. The first season was hosted by current American news personality, Lauren Sánchez; since the second season it has been hosted by former British children's television personality and one-time game show emcee, Cat Deeley.

The show features a tiered format wherein dancers from a variety of styles enter open auditions held in a number of major U.S. cities to showcase their unique style and talents and, if allowed to move forward, then are put through additional rounds of auditions to test their ability to adapt to different styles. At the end of this process, a small number of dancers are chosen as finalists.

These dancers move on to the competition's main phase, where they perform solo, duet, and group dance numbers in a variety of styles. They compete for the votes of the broadcast viewing audience which, combined with the input of a panel of judges, determines which dancers advance to the next stage from week to week.

The number of finalists has varied as determined by a season's format, but has typically been 20 contestants.

This is my favorite show. I'm a hip hop dancer, and I was thrilled to see the great hip hop in the show, as well as the other dance styles that were delivered with great technique and performance. All the dancers stepped up to the plate and conquered all the styles. Even though, on fox, this show is second to "American Idol" it's much more entertaining.I felt that dance is really coming back to America. And that's great, it's the most overlooked of the preforming arts and i'm glad that it's getting recognition.

The judges on the show gave good criticism. The ceorgraphers did everything right. The pairings had great chemistry. This show is a really good pick for anyone who is looking for a great reality show in the summer. One warning though: it's addicting. Once you see it you won't be able to stop watching.
