Dundee play host to St. Mirren at Dens Park on Saturday afternoon, looking to continue an impressive record. The Dee are clearly on top, having won 63 and lost only 26 of the 108 games.
The last time the two teams met at Dundee was back in December 2005, over five years ago, as they swept to an impressive 4-0 win in a Scottish Division One match.Saints make their first away trip of the season tomorrow afternoon when they travel to the City of Discovery to face SPL newboys Dundee.
It’s always difficult for any newly promoted team to avoid relegation the following season but Dundee’s quest is even harder than usual. They were only granted a place in the SPL a few weeks ago after it was agreed they, and not Dunfermline, would take the slot created by the demise of Rangers. With manager Barry Smith having assembled a squad on a First Division budget – although he’s been given a bit more cash since their promotion – anything other than a 12th place finish will be a huge success. Smith has done a decent job at Dens Park since he took over just under two years ago when the club went into administration. He took them on a terrific run in the season before last after they’d been penalised 25 points and comfortably kept them in the First Division, before taking them to second place last term.
Dundee’s unexpected return to the top flight will have come as a nice bonus for all their players, but none more so than Rab Douglas. The former Scotland goalie is still going strong even though he’s now in his 40s and was a player at Dens Park the last time the club was in the SPL before moving to Celtic in 2000. After spells in England he returned to Dundee four years ago and will be savouring every moment now his career is in its final few seasons, as will left-back Matt Lockwood. The experience of the pair, and the likes of Steven Milne and Kevin McBride, will be vital in Dundee’s battle to beat the drop. The majority of Smith’s signings would have been made with the First Division in mind. Striker Carl Finnigan returned to the club after a year with St Johnstone while midfielder Iain Davidson has moved across from Raith Rovers after spending the majority of his career at Stark’s Park. Smith has made three signings since the club was promoted, with former Aberdeen defender Davide Grassi and ex Falkirk striker Mark Stewart arriving last week while winger Jim McAlister brings some more SPL experience from his time at Hamilton.
Plenty of last season’s squad will want to grab their shot at the SPL and prove they should be playing in the top flight. Gary Irvine and Ryan Conroy both started their careers at Celtic before being released and both proved they are more than capable in the First Division, so it would not be a surprise to see them following in the footsteps of Paul McGowan and Graham Carey by proving you can make it in the SPL if you’re let go by one of the Old Firm. Neil McGregor has been a solid defender for a few years at SFL level and winger Nicky Riley was linked with a move to the SPL before deciding to stay at Dens so should be able to cope with the step up.
Dundee can call on the services of no less than three former Saints for tomorrow’s game. John Baird – who scored for the Buddies against Dundee the last time the two sides were in the same division – moved to Dens Park over the summer after a couple of goal filled seasons at Raith Rovers. Stephen O’Donnell, scorer of the goal that effectively kept Saints in the SPL back in 2010, has been at Dundee for a couple of years and is now club captain, while winger Jamie McCluskey seems to have rebuilt his career at the club after making just the odd appearance in his time in Paisley during Danny Lennon’s first year in charge. The visitors then took the lead when Andrew Shinnie threaded the ball through to McKay who slotted the ball under Craig Samson.
Parkin had a late chance to grab a point for the Buddies, but put his header from John Robertson's cross off target.
And the Englishman rifled in an effort at the death, but again Esson was untroubled.
However, McGregor saved a point for St Mirren when Esson flapped at an injury-time cross and the central defender headed the ball in from close range.
But the drama was not over as Guy was issued with a red card for violent conduct even as his team scored.
