Certainly a necessity given the numerous cliffhangers and unfinished stories that were left from last season, a noticeable divide presents itself in the premiere, where tying up loose ends with some characters is juxtaposed with new, compelling stories for others.

That being said, for those able to completely grasp hold of True Blood’s transition from its initial narrative to its current structuring, the season 5 premiere is a mixed bag of thoroughly enjoyable scenes and intriguing character moments.

With many of the best character moments coming from the likes of Pam (Kristin Bauer van Straten) and Terry (Todd Lowe), many of the other storylines present a more heightened emotional front, which can often become goofy or silly – while still remaining enjoyable.

Though teases of Russel Edgington and other impending challenges were interspersed throughout the premiere, there isn’t really a clear sense of where True Blood is heading as the season progresses. Having screened episodes beyond the premiere, it’s fair to say that some will be surprised to see what occurs by episode four. Of course, by now, this should be no surprise for fans of True Blood.

t doesn't hurt that this season's new blood includes characters played by Christopher Meloni ("Law & Order: SVU") and Tina Majorino ("Big Love"). But this is reportedly creator Alan Ball's final year as showrunner, and if everything truly has a season, it might be time to think about putting a stake through "True Blood" before it begins to seem more undead than alive.

After Kunal Bahl graduated from the University of Pennsylvania, where he'd studied engineering and management, he dreamed of going to work in the Silicon Valley and eventually starting his own company.

Instead, as CNN host and Time columnist Fareed Zakaria reports in "Global Lessons: The GPS Road Map for Making Immigration Work" (8 p.m. Sunday, CNN), the budding entrepreneur, for whom Microsoft had sought a work visa, saw his application rejected. He returned to his native India, where he co-founded SnapDeal.com, an online retailer that's already generated 1,500 jobs — in India.

Bahl's is one of a number of stories aimed at challenging perceptions about immigration policy, a hot-button issue that's not likely to be resolved anytime soon in a nation where the average person, according to Zakaria, believes 39 percent of the U.S. population was born elsewhere.

That the actual figure — 13 percent — is lower than Canada's probably won't make much of a difference, either. But for those who haven't already made up their minds, "Global Lessons" actually has a few.

However you want to describe it, TRUE BLOOD is not only unlike any vampire story that's been done before, it's not like any series that's on right now. It's DARK SHADOWS-meets deep-fried Southern Gothic, and only Alan Ball, the creator of SIX FEET UNDER, would dare stick his neck out to bring it to you.

Based on the novels of Charlaine Harris, which I've never read, (but certainly will after this!), BLOOD takes place in the not-too-distant future. It's been two years since the world got a shock it never expected: vampires came "out of the coffin" as a race. We suspected they always lived - and fed - amongst us, but now it's official, and just as before with race relations and as it is now with GLBT people, the reaction across the board is the same - fear of change and fear of the unknown influences most people's feelings about it.

And it doesn't seem to matter much that vamps now opt for finding nourishment from a bottled beverage made of synthetic plasma called - wait for it - "TRU BLOOD", rather than from the warm, breathing, two-legged receptacles called Everybody Else.

Sookie Stackhouse, however, has her own unique take on the whole deal. Sookie (X-MEN'S Anna Paquin) lives and works as a waitress in Bon Temps, LA, at a roadhouse restaurant called Merlotte's, the center of most of the series' action. She serves up pitchers of beer and sweet tea, and will give you a piece of her mind, once she has a piece of yours...though you'll wonder how she knew what you were thinking.

Sookie is a telepath, and unfortunately for her, she can't turn off the constant flow of other peoples' streams of consciousness...most of which offers way too much information.
