The most recent encounter between these two sides at Old Trafford was just last season, in August 2011, with Manchester United running out comfortable 3-0 winners in a Premier League match.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men are yet to set the league alight with their form this season but 12 points from their opening five league games have left them in a solid position, just a point adrift of early leaders Chelsea.

Tottenham, meanwhile, have made up for a lacklustre start with back-to-back wins against Reading and QPR to sit eighth in the table with eight points.

The jury still appears to be out on new Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas, who replaced Harry Redknapp in the summer, but victory over United would no doubt see the Portuguese's stock rise.

However, with United having won their last six consecutive games in all competitions without ever really hitting top gear, Spurs could have their work cut out on Saturday.

Villas-Boas will be boosted by the form of Jermain Defoe, who has scored four goals for Tottenham and two for England so far this season and will be on the hunt for his 200th career goal at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have been awarded a penalty in each of their last three league matches. The last Premier League club to get four in a row was Arsenal in 2007.

Wayne Rooney has scored seven goals in his last eight Premier League appearances against Tottenham, and five in the last five.

Robin van Persie is set to make his 200th Premier League appearance. He scored five goals and made four assists in his last six league home games against Tottenham while at Arsenal.

Tottenham

The win over QPR gave boss Andre Villas-Boas back-to-back wins in the Premier League for the first time since January, when his then-Chelsea side beat Wolves 2-1 away and Sunderland 1-0 at home.

Tottenham have scored a league-high 88% of their goals in the second half this season.

Jermain Defoe has had more shots than any other player in the Premier League this season (31) and has had the most on target (nine). He has four goals and an assist in five league appearances and is currently on 199 club career goals.
