The friends are relieved when the couple decides to remain friends, but the complications are just starting. Forget who gets to keep the ring -- when a couple splits, the real question is, who gets to keep the friends? In this modern comedy, a couple's break-up will complicate all of their friends' lives and make everyone question their choices. When life throws you for a curve, hold on tight to the people you love. Every circle of friends has someone who's the gravitational center. For years, perfect couple Dave and Alex drew their friends in and held them together. Now that they've split, does this group have the stuff to stay together? Or do Max, Brad, Jane and Penny have to choose sides? Suddenly every event is a negotiation... like, who gets to go on the annual ski trip?
There are a lot of big questions to be answered, but this group has been together so long, somehow, little by little, they'll figure out how to hold on, even though their center is split up. It helps that Dave and Alex have agreed to stay friends. But there will definitely be other complications down the road.
This show isn't afraid to ask the embarrassing personal questions that inevitably arise in every long-term, close-knit group of friends.
Afterward, cast members Adam Pally, Zach Knighton and Stephen Guarino (Derrick) were joined by EPs David Caspe and Jonathan Groff joined The Hollywood Reporter on stage for a Q&A. And while conversation focused on the comedy's atypical portrayal of gay characters and Guarino's pitches for future Derrick storylines, they did address the immediate question of where the new season picks up with Alex (Elisha Cuthbert) and Dave (Knighton).
Q&A: 'Happy Endings' Creator David Caspe Talks Renewals, Sitcom Romance and Unaired Episodes
"What we try do with the show is make sure that the relationships feel real, so it feels like Dave and Alex kind of need to reconnect again," said Groff. "They never had that rebound. I don't think that will go well."
That romantic backslide will open the door for Penny (Casey Wilson) to pursue other options.
"We're going to have Penny to actually try and have a relationship," said Caspe, noting that Brian Austin Green is set to return as her Skype wedding date Chris -- though he won't be her new boyfriend.
"We're breaking a story right now where Max [Pally] is not all that comfortable with Penny's new boyfriend," added Caspe.
Looking back at the recent finale, they also expanded on the recent story that Max's Madonna cover band, Mandonna, almost didn't get to perform "Like a Prayer" during the episode. [EW]
"It wasn't that there was any problem with Madonna," said Groff. "It was just this long process of finding who the right person was."
Same as the other's really. I adore Elisha Cuthbert, but I'm also a big SNL fan, so Casey Wilson was an added bonus. But I DVR'd it and gave it a shot and I'll be coming back for more. The episode where Adam Pally's character is too scared to come out to his parents, so Jayne plays his "Beard" was great. Fast Forward to Jazz Kwon Do and I think ABC found themselves a winner.
Listen, its nothing like "Friends" other than 3 males and 3 Females. That crappy show that NBC just axed, "Perfect Couples" was more like it than this. I would certainly say its more like "How I Met Your Mother," meets "Cougar Town". 2 more shows that have great writing and built some decent back stories for their characters. Needless to say, I'll keep watching and hope that ABC doesn't squash it too early.
