From murder and espionage to terrorism and stolen submarines, these special agents traverse the globe to investigate all crimes with Navy or Marine Corps ties. With liberal doses of humor, it's a show that focuses on the sometimes complex and always amusing dynamics of a team forced to work together in high-stress situations.NCIS kicked off its 10th season with another strong installment, one that was basically the final chapter of a five-episode arc, beginning in April with the burning of a Baltimore warehouse in "Rekindled" and concluding with Gibbs and Dearing finally squaring off mano-a-mano.As premieres go, it didn't quite live up to the hype, with the conclusion a bit anticlimactic and parts feeling somewhat disjointed. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable, and it's great to have the team back in one piece.
Unlike last season's opener, which picked up the action months after the previous finale and saw Tony piece together the puzzle through a series of flashbacks, tonight began mere seconds after "Til Death Do Us Part" and the blast that rocked NCIS' headquarters, leaving its agents in peril.
With debris still in the air, Gibbs was ordered by SecNav Jarvis to proceed with "Extreme Prejudice" in the hunt for Dearing. First, however, we learned the status of his team members:
McGee sustained a shrapnel wound he wasn't even aware of until becoming light-headed. Anyone who's ever been through a traumatic event can attest to the masking of pain with pure adrenaline. Fortunately, he came back strong, and we saw him call Penny afterward. It's unclear if Lily Tomlin will reprise her role as his grandmother, but EP Gary Glasberg hinted to TV Fanatic that he may explore Tim's relationship with his father soon.
Ducky and Palmer reunited at the hospital, shortly after the former's heart attack. In one of the episode's most poignant moments, he encouraged his protege to return to work without him; in another, the old man came back and uncovered a critical clue (off the record of course, as he's still in recovery).
I feel like so much went on in this one that maybe the best way to talk about it is to take on each character’s story separately. First of all, they started us out with Ducky which was great. Sure, yeah, I know no one is actually going to die but I was still worried about him so it was nice to see him awake and talking. I’m also glad that he didn’t immediately go straight back to work, but took it easy as it allowed Palmer to step up and act as M.E. for the team. But even though Palmer was doing Ducky’s job, I’m glad that he did it with his own Palmer-like flair. Ducky is known for his stories and Palmer is getting known for his inappropriate jokes.
Next up was Tony and Ziva. Not a whole lot happened with them once they were out of the elevator, but I did enjoy those few scenes they had. The Tiva lovers I’m sure will see them one way and those of us on the Tony/Ziva friendship team will see them another. Either way, they were very well done and I liked that Ziva’s dad called her while they were trapped. I do wish Tony’s dad had called him though. I wonder if he did and we’re just to assume that it happened off-camera?
The next big story (at least I thought it was going to be big) was McGee. Somehow I got the impression from the various previews and interviews I’d read that he would be hurt much worse than he was. Of course I’m glad he’s safe, but I do kind of wish that there’d been just a little more drama there. Though I was intrigued by the conversation about his father; it makes me think that we may get to meet the Admiral this year.
Abby’s story is obviously going to be continued this week, so I won’t say much about it until I see how it continues, but she once again acted as the voice of the hearts of the team. That voice deep inside the big, bad agents with guns who don’t want to admit that they’re scared when their worlds fall apart and people die.
Both Vance and Fornell had small bits to play, but they both added to the story and I liked how they both were there to support Gibbs when he needed it.
I've written about this show before on IMDb --- but here I am months later in May 2005 and yet it still continues to be impressive. There have been a few shows that were "bleh" in the last season but the "SWAK" episode tonight really got a few great moments of emotion between the cast members.
The writers (at least to me) were able to pull off the "suspended disbelief" and I got pulled into the moment as DiNozzo was about to kick the bucket. I sure hope they keep most of the cast in the next season, as they seem to play off each other brilliantly. The only cast member I could see losing (according to the season finale preview, they lose an NCIS agent) is McGee.
He's great and believable for his role, but any of the others lost as regulars on the show would break down the core character interplay. The McGee character could be replaced...but the others would be much more difficult. But then again I guess this is all decided and in the can...we'll find out on May 24th.
Finally there was Gibbs, who I knew would be the one to see this entire story to its completion. Even before Dearing had hurt Gibbs’ family, I knew that Dearing wasn’t long for this world. But blowing up NCIS was the final straw. The way that Gibbs caught him was a bit unexpected though.
That Dearing would give Gibbs clues to lead him to the house where his son was born and then try to claim that he and Gibbs were alike because they both lost their children – that was an angle I didn’t think he would use. But no matter what he said, Gibbs knows that he is nothing like Dearing and I don’t think he felt a single bit of remorse when he took the guy out. Maybe remorse for not doing it sooner before his people were hurt, but that’s probably it.
