Det. Mac Taylor, a dedicated and driven crime-scene investigator who believes that everything is connected and everyone has a story, is a decorated Marine who served in Desert Storm and dabbled in war photography. The job is his life; he focuses on cases until they are solved. The team includes the newest addition, Josephine "Jo" Danville, an experienced investigator from Washington, D.C., whose work is driven by her empathy for the victim.

They work with a team of experts, including Danny Messer, an investigator with an unflappable spirit and a troubled family history, which he uses on the job as he blends his own set of hybrid ethics. Messer was personally selected to join the team by Mac, and he attempts daily to live up to that honor and responsibility.

Sheldon Hawkes is the crime lab’s former coroner, a brilliant Ph.D. who transitioned to the field team. Joining them is Don Flack, an edgy, hardcore homicide detective with a quick wit, impressive forensic insight and a long family history in law enforcement; and Lindsay Monroe Messer, a young, athletic CSI with a Midwestern work ethic who is willing to roll up her sleeves to tackle any job, and rarely hints at the dark and devastating secret that originally motivated her to dedicate her life to being an investigator.

Lindsay and Danny are married, and have a daughter, Lucy. Rounding out the team is lab rat Adam Ross and eccentric coroner Dr. Sid Hammerback. The New York CSIs may have a different process from those in Las Vegas or Miami, but they are guided by the same steadfast determination.

These skilled investigators follow the evidence as they piece together clues and eliminate doubt, to ultimately crack their cases.

That new approach was readily evident from the opening scene of the aptly-titled “Reignited,” which took its sweet time getting reacquainted with our main cast. Of course, this being “CSI,” the minute we see a heretofore unforeseen friend of a main character, we know they’re either about to get clipped or accused of murder before the hour’s up.

Here, we had a firefighter pal of Mac’s, attending a NYPD vs. NYFD hockey game & betting dinner on the outcome. (It was fun seeing the other boys on the ice, and I had a bit of a moment where I wistfully recalled the awesomeness of “Rescue Me”- you are missed.)

The firefighters win the day, but I guess Mac’s pal will be having that last meal in the afterlife, because faster than you can say arson, he’s up in smoke and of course it was no accident. So naturally, it’s up to Mac & Co. to solve the case of the fallen firefighter.

Prime suspect number one is a recently paroled arsonist played by a near-unrecognizable Rob Morrow, late of “Numb3rs.” He looks like he’s auditioning for the Mark David Chapman story, but I suppose he’d take that as a compliment. Hey, it worked for Jared Leto.sort of.

Whatever the case, Morrow does a good job of slinking into his thorny role. He may not be guilty of the crime at hand, but he definitely looks up to something, and judging by the preview of next week’s ep, we haven’t seen the last of him, so if he isn’t up to no good here, he will be in the near future.

I love the CSI series, but CSI:NY is my definite favorite. There's much more character development than in the other series. You can actually follow the characters one by one, and get to know them. It's in many ways more human.

For example, in CSI:Miami, Horatio Caine is presented as an almost clairvoyant person: He walks into a crime scene, and just by looking at some blood traces, he can say: "No, I don't think our victim went over here to call the police - he was going to warn his son who he thought was asleep.
